The Butler County Health Department has the opportunity to make FluMist® (Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal), a nasal spray flu vaccine, available FREE for eligible individuals 2-49 years of age.  Persons with asthma and pregnant women should not receive the FluMist.
The Butler County Health Department will be offering the FluMist at the El Dorado Office, 206 N. Griffith, from 9 to 11 a.m. & 1-4:30 p.m.  Jan. 1.  The FREE FluMist will also be available at the Augusta Clinic, 2100 Ohio, Suite B on Wednesdays from 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Michael Rausch will also be offering FREE FluMist at his three office locations with no office call charges.  Call for office hours and locations, El Dorado 320-9191, Augusta 775-9191 and Douglass 747-2300.
The doses are available FREE of charge as part of a partnership between The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and MedImmune, the manufacturer of FluMist, to provide influenza vaccine to eligible individuals in underserved communities and populations.
This joint effort supports the goal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to raise awareness of influenza and extend the influenza vaccination season into December and beyond.  Vaccination rates typically decline after Thanksgiving, although the peak of influenza season usually occurs in February and March.
FluMist is a live attenuated influenza virus vaccine indicated for active immunization of individuals two to 49 years of age against influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and type B contained in the vaccine.
FluMist cannot be administered to children less than two years of age due to an increased risk of hospitalization and wheezing that was observed in clinical trials.  FluMist should not be administered to any individual with asthma and to children less than five years of age with recurrent wheezing unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.
FluMist cannot be given to individuals with severe asthma or active wheezing.
If Guillain-Barre syndrome has occurred with prior influenza vaccination or if an individual is immunocompromised, the decision to give FluMist should be based on careful consideration of the potential benefits and risks.  FluMist should not be administered to individuals with underlying medical conditions predisposing them to wild-type influenza infection complications unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk.  FluMist should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.  Most common adverse reactions (occurring in 10 percent or more of individuals receiving FluMist and at a rate at least five percent higher than in those receiving placebo) are runny nose or nasal congestion in recipients of all ages, fever more than 100 degrees F in children two to six years of age, and sore throat in adults.  FluMist may not protect all individuals receiving the vaccine.  FluMist is for intranasal administration only.  Complete Prescribing Information for FluMist is available by calling 1-877-FLUMIST (1-877-358-6478) or visiting http://www.medimmune.com/pdf/products/flumist_pi.pdf for additional information.
NACCHO (National Association of County and City Health Officials) is the national organization representing the nation's nearly 3,000 local health departments.  These agencies work every day on the front lines to protect and promote the health of their communities.  NACCHO develops resources and programs and promotes national policies that support effective local public health practice.  For additional information about NACCHO, visit: www.naccho.org.
