Preceding Monday’s Augusta Board of Education meeting, several Augusta High School art students were recognized for their creative talents and for being named  winners of the Scholastic Art Awards.
Part of Ewalt Elementary School’s presentation at Monday’s School Board meeting concerned each Ewalt student’s participation in  the Dream Rocket project.  Lynn Archer, Ewalt fourth grade teacher, explained that the project is a large scale collaborative “wrap.” Up to 8,000 artworks will be created by individuals from various regions of the world, and then connected side by side to wrap the 365’ Saturn V Moon Rocket at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala.
The designated theme of the panels, “Dare to Dream”, challenges individuals to expand beyond the present state of the world and imagine the future. Perhaps most importantly, individuals are challenged to imagine their contribution to that future. These individual dreams and aspirations will combine to create a monumental 32,000 square feet of art work.
The community will be invited to ‘Dream Rocket Day’ on May 1st and view the students’ art pieces about their dreams.

Construction update
In Superintendent John Black’s district update to the board, he reminded them that by the end of 2012, the district’s construction projects will be completed.

Work continues at the Middle School with foundation work being done for the new gymnasium and classrooms addition.  The addition is expected to be finished by Christmas 2012.
Dr. Black brought up another Middle School issue, “There has been more discussion on the traffic problems on State St.  It is important to converse with the City Engineer...I have spent time observing the situation.  The problem is worse in the afternoon.  We do want a safe environment for the kids,” he explained and assured the board that he would keep them updated on the traffic issue.
Construction is finished at Robinson Elementary, with just a couple of minor items left to finish.
Work at Garfield Elementary is on track.  The brick work is completed and stone work is in progress.  Temporary windows will soon be installed so the interior can be heated, making inside work easier.  Masons are working on the walls and preparing the trusses to be set, and work on the FEMA shelter area has begun.  The building turnover date has been set at Nov. 12, 2012.
A few items at Lincoln are being finished.  Additional cubbies have been installed in the kindergarten classrooms.  Issues with counter tops in the office and library, and a non-functioning flag pole are being resolved.  Snow fencing was installed to prevent people from driving through the playground area.
A meeting to discuss the design of the football concession area and rest rooms, and the baseball concession and rest rooms is expected to be scheduled soon.  Crossland would like to have these projects completed by the end of the summer.

Evaluation in process

Before board members went into an executive session to discuss negotiations, board president Bill Rinkenbaugh explained that the evaluation for the superintendent is in process and will be discussed further in an executive session next month.
“We might have to set a special meeting in March and then have the final evaluation after that,” Rinkenbaugh advised.
