An ice fishing incident at the City Lake surfaced near the end of Monday night’s meeting of the Augusta City Council.
Councilman Mike Rawlings said the activity reportedly involving an adult should be looked into for the city-owned local lake as well as Santa Fe Lake west of the community.
It was pointed out the state wildlife department allows ice fishing, but neiher owns or controls the City Lake or Santa Fe Lake.
Councilman Tom Leffler said ice fishing is common in northern states, but did feel it should apply here because of generally warmer weather does not allow ice to freeze to a sufficient thickness.
Fears of children mimicking ice fishing adults could have serious consequence, according to Council discussion.
Leffler and Councilman Ron Reavis moved to have the city attorney prepare a ordinance that would prohibit ice fishing on lakes owned by the City of Augusta. The motion passed 6-1 with Councilman Mike Huddleston voting against it by reasoning that common sense safety should be an individual responsibility.
Councilman Mike Wallace suggested “No Ice Fishing” signs be posted at both lakes.
