Andover Central football coach Tom Audley was excited to get the Jaguars outside in the evenings this week for the first full week of practices.
Both Central and Andover began team practices Monday night, and are set for scrimmages Saturday. Andover will have its scrimmage Saturday morning, while Central will play that night.
Audley said he has a lot of work to do with such a large group of players, a lot of whom were not on the team’s roster last season. Audley said he had about 90 kids come try out to play. Andover had a similar number.
The teams are two of the best in their division of the Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League. Both coaches undoubtedly have Sept. 18 circled on their calendars.
That would be Week 3, when the Trojans and Jaguars face each other this season. The winner of that will be in the driver’s seat for the division title.
Last season, the Jaguars lost to the Trojans for the first time in school history. Audley, fully aware of the ramifications of that game, said the rivalry is exciting to be a part of. Even better is that the atmosphere from that night will help both teams better prepare for the rest of the season after seeing the playing level they need to maintain.
For now, the teams are focused on getting back in condition for the season. Both teams made the playoffs last year, and both have the high expectations to improve on that this time around.
Time will tell.
