In trying to get in as many games in after so many rainouts, the Augusta American Legion baseball team has gone from having to restart the season to having many players tired because of all the games.
And it’s starting to wear the Orioles down as they still have almost a month before hosting the American Legion Zone Tournament at the end of the month.
The Orioles showed their weariness and frustrations Tuesday night in losing both games of a doubleheader to the El Dorado “AA” team at Wheeler Stadium. El Dorado won the first game 14-6, and completed the sweep in a 13-2 rout. It was the first home games for the Orioles in over a month.
El Dorado scored three runs in the first two innings of the opener before the Orioles got on the scoreboard thanks to a RBI single by Dereck Chilcott. Three Augusta errors in the top of the third pushed the El Dorado lead up to five, but the Orioles got a solo home run by Ajay Shenold in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2.
Augusta made three more errors in the top of the fourth inning as El Dorado scored five more times.
Wade McHone hit a RBI double and later scored on a fielding error to cut the Orioles’ margin down to seven; and a home run by Seth Smith to open the bottom of the fifth made the score 11-5.
El Dorado was able to get some breaks on a couple of hits — including a two-run double that hit third base — for three runs in the top of the sixth; and although the Orioles scored a run in the bottom of the inning when McHone scored on a wild pitch, the game ended at that point on the eight-run, five-inning rule.
Christian Ingalls was the losing pitcher in the first game.
The Orioles gave up two runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap; but were able to get one run back when courtesy runner Cody McHone went from first to third base on a hit by Brad Lakey, then went home went the throw to the base went into the dugout.
El Dorado scored one run in the second inning and six more in the third before Augusta got their other run in the second game when Grady Meyer scored from third base on a wild pitch. El Dorado scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the sweep.
Smith was the losing pitcher in the second game.
The Orioles will now get six days to rest before their next doubleheader, at home on Monday. The Orioles are now 6-11 on the season after the El Dorado “A” team forfeited their remaining four games against Augusta this year.
