The children’s song “Rain, Rain; Go Away!” could be a perfect anthem for this year’s Augusta American Legion baseball team.
The Orioles had their sixth postponed doubleheader of the season Wednesday when they were supposed to play the Wichita Braves at Wheeler Stadium. Although it didn’t rain until late Wednesday night, the game was called around 3:30 p.m. because the grounds at the field were just too wet to play.
“It’s beyond frustrating,” said Orioles head coach Jay Ingalls.
The Orioles have played only five games and are currently 2-3 on the season. They haven’t played June 12 in El Dorado against its “AA” team, and that game saw only one of the two scheduled games played because of storms in the area. In contrast, two of the teams on Augusta’s schedule — the Buhler Cyclones and Pratt 86ers — played their 14th and 18th games, respectively, last night in a doubleheader at Pratt.
“It’s just throwing us behind,” Ingalls said. “There (are teams) that are in mid-season form and we’re still kicking off. But we’re not alone with our problems. Winfield has played only six games, and the rain out game against El Dorado was only their third and our fifth.
“It’s just in this area that’s getting rained out. Newton has played more than we have and they’ve only rained out twice."
Augusta will try again to get back on the field Friday with a doubleheader at Buhler and Sunday at Wichita Collegiate. The weather calls for a 20 percent chance of rain for the Buhler twinbill, while no rain is scheduled for Sunday at Collegiate. The Orioles then play at a tournament in Pratt and aren’t schedule to play at Wheeler Stadium again until July 1 against the El Dorado-AA team.
