KINGMAN—Augusta coach Brad Kohlman was as dejected after Tuesday night’s game as the Orioles were during the fourth quarter of it.
Augusta’s girls basketball team led for most of the game against Kingman, but the Eagles made one final run for a 52-44 win, crushing the Orioles’ hopes of ending their now 10-game losing streak.
Kohlman said that once Kingman made a few good plays and the Orioles made a few bad ones, they lost their mental focus.
“When that happens, teams take advantage of that,” Kohlman said. “...You just kind of check out after things start going wrong.”
Kyrsten Crawford hit a jumper from the wing to give Augusta a 38-35 lead early in the fourth quarter. After that, Kingman went on a 17-6 run in the final six minutes.
Augusta missed its chances to stay in it. The Orioles were 1-of-12 from the free throw line in the period.
In fact, Augusta allowed Kingman to stay a lot closer throughout the game than maybe it should have. The Eagles scored 13 second-chance points through the first three quarters.
Crawford finished with a game-high 22 points off 11 field goals. She was the recipient of a beautiful cross-court pass from Shelby Brasfield, who had four assists in the first half.
Natalie Rives scored a three-pointer on a pass from Brasfield to close the first quarter. Shawnee Wallace completed a three-point play from a Brasfield pass.
Becca Carr scored four points in her first varsity start. Christina Downs scored seven points.
