It wasn’t necessarily for a win that the Augusta Orioles American Legion baseball team went out for Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at Wichita Collegiate.
And although the Orioles lost both games of the doubleheader to the Sox at Cameron Field, it was finally getting some action that was really the focus of the coaches for the Orioles. Augusta has had after seven doubleheaders have been postponed or cancelled due to the weather — including four this past week. The Sox won the first game 18-5 and the nightcap 16-8.
“It’s like we’re starting the season over again,” said head coach Jay Ingalls to the Orioles before the first game and they played just like a team that had played only one game in two weeks.
The Orioles (2-5) scored two runs in the top of the first inning when Ajay Shenold scored on a double steal with Dereck Chilcott hit a RBI single and Chilcott later scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Christian Ingalls; the Sox scored 12 times in the bottom of the first off of Ingalls and Seth Smith, and four more in the second to make the score 16-2.
RBI groundouts by Smith and Ingalls in the third made it 16-4, and after giving up single runs in the third and fourth, Augusta’s final run came on a RBI single by Chilcott in the top of the fifth. Shenold scored three times in the first game for the Orioles.
The Orioles left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning of the nightcap and the Sox scored a single run in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.
Colton Easterday pushed Augusta ahead in the second with a RBI single, then later scored on a wild pitch, but the Sox scored again to tie the game.
Cody Patten hit a RBI single to give the Orioles the lead again, but Augusta again left the bases loaded, the Sox answered with another run.
Augusta took an 8-3 lead in the fourth on RBI singles by Jake Smith and Alex Sizemore, a RBI groundout by Patten, and two runs off Sox’s errors; but the weary Orioles gave up 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth to close out the game.
Augusta will play at Winfield in another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
