Erin Fox: And now this

Wednesday night I could not sleep. As in, I laid in bed, then laid on the couch, then subjected myself to boring TV that any other day of the week would have knocked me out in minutes, and yet my eyes stayed open and my mind alert. Five days out of seven I take a nap, such is my need for sleep, and Wednesday was no different in that I tried to take a nap but I only tossed and turned for an hour and a half while no sleep came. I realize that most people would have gotten up and moved on with their day long before I did, but when it comes to sleep I am willing to keep trying.
I have heard of women who cannot sleep during pregnancy but that was never an issue with my other two pregnancies. Too much sleep was probably my issue before. This staying up all night for no good reason is for the birds. Let those little chirpy things stay up all night and let me sleep.
Hubby came downstairs at some point to check on me. I’d finally entered a light sleep when he came and asked me what I was doing. “I couldn’t sleep,” I whined.
When I told him I could not come back up to bed because our son had taken my spot he quietly--and I think half-asleep himself, lucky man--lumbered back up the stairs while I stayed awake for at least another hour.
Babycenter.com just happened to send me an email the other day about sleep problems during pregnancy and what to do about them. Let me just say their suggestions on what to do with insomnia are weak at best and useless in reality. Thanks for that one, guys.
I’m trying not to complain like I did in last week’s column. If this goes on more than one night you can be sure it will turn into complaining, but right now it’s just “WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE?”
So please excuse me if you find me slumped in the chair on my porch during one of these gorgeous days, snoring with my mouth open while my kids run and giggle in the yard. A girl’s gotta take advantage of sleep whenever she can get it.
