My mother-in-law bought me an orchid for my birthday. A very pretty, very healthy orchid. My brain clenched and my smile tightened when she brought it in my front door because I fast-forwarded to the time when the very pretty and very healthy orchid is dead because of my incompetence, and the subsequent embarrassment from killing a plant my mother-in-law has given me. I already know the feeling, as I have done it before.
You see, Hubby’s mother has quite the green thumb. She lives on a few acres in a small town and she loves plants. And her plants love her. They bloom and grow just as they should. Last summer she held the wedding of a family friend in her backyard because it is that gorgeous. And Hubby’s mother’s mother is on the level beyond green thumb. She could sell tickets to her garden. And that is not an exaggeration. In the height of the blooming season you would think you’re walking in a magazine when you‘re really just in the middle of a farm in rural Kansas. I’ve asked her before if she’s thought of sending pictures of her garden to a national publication but she is one of those humble people who doesn’t like the attention. So in deference to her I will not tell you where she lives. But if you really want to know I can point you in the general direction. And the drive would be worth it.
Back to me. I am pretty sure I have killed two of my evergreen bushes that we just bought in September. How did I do this?!? They are HARDY evergreen bushes that love Kansas weather! And their leaves are yellowing! Shameful.
So when my very kind and very optimistic mother-in-law walked in with that orchid I was nervous. But I read the directions titled “Orchids are EASY!” and watered the plant just as directed, placed the flower in just the right light, and friends, I think that baby is happy. Ms. Orchid has strong leaves and new buds forming. Now we’re only a week in on our journey together, but still, I look at that thing and am impressed.
Hubby will be impressed but right now he is still in shock. The other night he was sitting on the couch when he reached over and felt the petals with a bit of surprise on his face. I hear ya on that one, Baby. I’m still in a bit of shock, too.
