With all this cold and snowy weather the kids and I have been staying inside quite a bit. And with all this staying inside there are only so many times you can play dominoes or do laundry or watch cartoons. This has lead to baking. Lots and lots of baking. Because what is better on a snowy day than warm banana bread? I can’t really think of a thing.
The first trimester I was pregnant I couldn’t eat sugar. You probably remember me complaining about it in this very column. But this trimester I am feeling good and sugar once again tastes delicious. The world is as it should be. Yet just because my body once again tolerates the yummy sweet stuff does not mean that I should be eating it throughout the day.
I keep thinking about the next appointment with my doctor, the one where I’m sure she’ll scold me for all the weight I’ve gained. It was around this time with both of my first pregnancies that I gained more than the suggested amount of weight. My first doctor came into the room, sat down, looked at her chart and said “You’ve gained an awful lot of weight this time.” Dear Doctors: Don’t say that to a pregnant woman. You will crush her and her hormones and she will worry about it constantly for the next two days. My doctor with my second pregnancy (who was actually a super-wonderful mid-wife) came into the room, sat down, looked at her chart and said “I’m concerned…” Much nicer way of putting it. This time I’ll probably just open the conversation with “Look, I’ve been enjoying food these past few weeks. Let’s not spend too much time worrying about it.”
In the meantime, though, I need to find a hobby that is not baking. Preferably one that is as cheap and easy as baking, but does not put on the calories like all those delicious cookies tend to. I’m thinking on it. I could go back to making cards, or I could learn how to sew, or I could just enjoy some brownies.
