Erin Fox: What's that? A cry?

Because Baby Chickadee arrived so quickly (remember those three blessedly quick pushes?) all the fluid didn’t get squeezed out of her lungs, which lead to some rapid breathing on her part. Doctors tend not to like it when newborns breathe rapidly. The best way to clear out the fluid in her lungs was for her to cry. But she was/is a docile creature and hadn’t really cried yet. So in the hospital, as I sat in my bed and watched Hubby through my hormonal fog, he snapped a Silly Bandz on Baby Chickadee’s foot and we waited for her to cry. It took her a moment but Baby Chickadee wailed and Hubby didn’t let me pick her up for about thirty seconds.
That thirty seconds was hard on this mama.
Another round of the Silly Bandz later that evening and Baby Chickadee cried all that fluid out of her lungs and the rapid breathing ceased.
All this to say that Baby Chickadee doesn’t cry much. She is the most laid back of all my kids and we can go an entire day without hearing her lungs reach their full potential. Of course, if I miss her hungry cues she’ll whine for a bit, and if that doesn’t get my attention the crying begins, but as soon as she’s fed she’s fine and back to her sweetly quiet state.
The other day I was in the kitchen washing my hands when apparently I’d missed the hungry cues and the whining because G came running in, panicked and slightly angry with me. “Mommy! Didn’t you hear the baby cry?! She’s crying!” I knew she’d be fine in the 10 seconds it took me to get to her, so I walked to the towel rack to dry my hands. This was not okay with my son. “MOMMY! The baby is crying!”
Another day we were in the car and Baby Chickadee was WAILING. Girlfriend was hungry and furious that she was in her carseat. But being only five minutes away from home neither Hubby nor I were willing to pull over the car to let her eat. G again was upset. “Mommy! I don’t like to hear her sad crying!”
The baby’s sweet brother cannot handle it when his sister cries. Well, he cannot handle it when his baby sister cries. Little Missy crying? He’s okay with that.
