Dear Gideon,
Oftentimes your daddy and I are told what a neat boy you are.  And it’s true.  You are spectacular.  And also oftentimes, a compliment of our parenting follows the praise given about you.
But the truth is that your daddy and I have done very little to make you who you are.  You, sweet Gideon, were fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator.  Never did I understand so well that verse in the book of Psalm before my children came along.  To see each of your different attributes, each of your unique personalities, each that were woven intrinsically into you before you came of my tummy, I better understand just how much you are from God and not from me.
And so today, on your seventh birthday, I want to celebrate some of the virtues God gave you that make you fearfully, beautifully and wonderfully YOU.
Your enthusiasm for all things you love.  Whether it be Spider-Man or Transformers, friends or your family, if you love something or someone you are ALL IN.  I pray that God take this fervor and direct you to passionately learn about and love issues that are important to His kingdom.
Your passion for justice.  You are quick to point out not only when you are wronged but also when one of your sisters is wronged, or even when somebody you don’t know is treated unfairly.  I pray God take that passion for equality to help the downtrodden that others of us forget.
Your generosity.  You are quick to share your toys or food with others.  Keep that.  Do not cling to objects because they will leave you empty.  I pray that your heart continues to expand with joy as you give to those around you.
Your thankfulness.  Without my prompting you often say “Thank you” at the most sweetly appropriate times.  Maintain your humble spirit and be ever-thankful for the gifts our Heavenly Father has bestowed upon you.
Your joy.  Son, you have the sweetest heart all day long.  I do not know how a person can wake up in such a good mood, day after day, even after getting your less-than-needed sleep and maintain that calm happiness throughout the day.  And still, when I or your sister snaps at you unfairly, you are quick to brush it off and fast to forgive.  I pray that your joy bolster others and bring them closer to Jesus.
Have a good day, my precious son.  You deserve it.
