Derrill Gene Nusz has begun a new journey with the Lord Jesus Christ on June 28, 2009.

Viewing will be 1-8 p.m. Wednesday with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.  The celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Augusta Kansas. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

He was born in Geary, Okla. to his mother Geneva Nusz on Aug. 18th, 1941. He grew up with four brothers (Herman, Errol, Arley and Buddy) and one sister, (Naola).   He was known as an all around sportsman as he grew up in his home town of Geary. After graduation he went to Clark College in Vancouver, Wash. to be on their wrestling team. He always loved sports, whether by participating in the sport himself or watching/coaching his family sporting events.

He believed his biggest and wisest commitment in life happened on Aug. 23, 1963 as he married Mary Ellen Davis in Chickasha Okla.  They resided in Oklahoma City while Gene worked for Aero Commander and with this experience and training opened doors for him in Wichita. He worked for Raytheon Aircraft (Beechcraft) as a DER – Certified Power Plant Propulsion Engineer.  He also operated his own business Nusz Aviation Consulting which he really enjoyed.  He retired in 2003 and really enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, Mary. Their travels led them to Canada, Mexico, London, Paris, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Austria, Prague and Budapest building great memories together.

Other joys in his life were his family.  His daughter Cindy and her husband Danny Cartmill reside in Oklahoma they have two children, Molly (20) and Daniel III (19). And his son, Jeff and his wife, Daphne Nusz resides here in Augusta with their twins Chandler and Payton (12).   He loved his family with all of his heart. He will be joining his mother Geneva and Corbin his grandson that passed at birth. He was a quiet man but when he spoke his messages held volumes of knowledge to his family and friends.

Gene had always been a Oklahoma Sooner fan.  He loved going to the OU Sooner games with his son and grandsons a tradition in our family. He also loved coaching in the little league system here in Augusta.  Before Augusta had a little league football system he coached a football team In Wichita.  Who would have guess that two of these players made it to the big times (Barry and Byron Sanders were a part of the team for several years).  Gene use to keep stats for the Augusta High School for 10 years before starting to coach Jeff.

Gene has loved his family and friends throughout his years. The support over the past few months during our battle with pancreatic cancer has been appreciated more than words can ever say.
In lieu of flowers a memorial will be set up to the Gene Nusz Memorial Wrestling Scholarship Fund at Augusta High School.

Arrangements by Headley Funeral Chapel, Augusta.
