TOWANDA—Circle’s girls basketball team beat Augusta 62-32 Monday night in the first round of the Maize South sub-State basketball tournament.

With the loss, the Orioles’ season comes to a close with a 2-19 record.

“I was fairly impressed with the way they played,” coach Brad Kohlman said about his Orioles. “Obviously the season didn’t go the way we wanted it to in terms of wins and losses, but I think it went the way we wanted in terms of improvement throughout the year....I think they got a lot better. And this is a young team.”  

The Thurderbirds improve to 16-4 and will play Thursday against Mulvane, which beat El Dorado 47-46.

The Thunderbirds got off to a quick 11-0 run, led by Christy Couey’s six points in the first three minutes. Augusta closed to within seven, but Circle’s defense, which caused 11 turnovers in the second quarter, holding the Orioles to two points in the quarter.

Junior Hanna Fleming led the Thunderbirds with 11 points.

Senior Natalie Rives scored her final basket with the Orioles on a three-point shot during the third quarter. Senior Shelby Brasfield also played her final game.

Kyrsten Crawford led the Orioles with 14 points. Christina Downs added eight points. Becca Carr scored two points.
