This is a blog entry from U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt regarding holding lawmakers accountable to spending. It is a series of weekly blog posts from Tiahrt and Rep. Jerry Moran, who are both running for the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.:
Under President Obama, federal spending has exploded to more than $3,500,000,000,000. That’s nearly a whopping 25 percent of our total economy. We all know House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and President Obama are not interested in reigning in spending— but this dangerous habit of tax, borrow, and spend cannot continue.
That’s why this week I joined with conservative Representatives Mike Pence (R-Ind.), Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), and John Campbell (R-Calif.) in co-sponsoring a spending limit amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This proposed constitutional amendment would limit federal spending to one-fifth of the U.S. economy, which is the historical average for spending since World War II. Better yet, it would hold tax-and-spend liberal politicians accountable to budget constraints when they lack the discipline to do it themselves. This proposal does for federal spending what speed controls do on a freight train. It keeps the federal government from spending too much, too fast and derailing our economy.
We simply cannot trust the administration or the powers of Washington to voluntarily control spending. We as American citizens and taxpayers need the protection of a constitutional amendment to save us from the catastrophe of debt that is being mounted upon our children and grandchildren before it’s too late.
