A vaccine to counteract the affects of the H1N1 flu virus will be free to the public when the first supplies are available next month.
A doctor, a school nurse, and a public health nurse spoke on the new virus spreading in this country during a public information meeting Wednesday night at Andover Central High.
The highest incidence of H1N1 is in school-aged children. First wave vaccinations are recommended for pregnant women, and individuals age six months to 24 years of age. Persons age 25-64 with high risk medical conditions should also receive shots.
After their presentations, they responded to questions from the audience.
Until the vaccine is ready for mass distribution, Dr. Andrew Barclay reported patients in his office are being advised to take non-aspirin pain relievers and rest until the flu has run it’s course.
Dr. Barclay expects the vaccine to dribble out in stages over the next few months beginning in October.
Andover Schools Lead Nurse Kellie Bamford reports flu immunization clinics will be set up at at all schools once the district receives enough and H1N1 vaccine.
To reduce the spread of the disease among school-age children, Bamford recommended complete hand washing as often as possible and she was not talking about the “wet and and go” method.
She suggested singing the “Row, Row Your Boat” jingle for a timing as hands are washed. Her second song was singing “Happy Birthday to Yourself” twice.
When the flu immunization clinics are set, Bamford said the school patrons would be notified via the USD 385 website, phone calls, Friday folders, and The Gazette.
Public Health Nurse Carol Borger said the vaccine is expected to be available in shot and mist forms. However, the mist should not be used for anyone suffering from asthma or epilepsy.
