Augusta Senior Center representatives were buoyed by some financial assistance help offered by county officials during a Tuesday work session at the courthouse in El Dorado.
County Administrator Will Johnson told the the Butler County Commission, "It is an unfortunate situation the Augusta Senior Center is in and without the assistance of the County Commission, the Center is in danger of closing."
Activities at the center have continued since the departure of a longtime director late last year.
In the wake of that departure by resignation, the center learned it had a longstanding payroll tax issue to settle with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The commissioners have a plan to help the local center.
Administrator Johnson went on to say, "Even though this is technically a loan, there are essentially no risks to the County as we will simply withhold the payments from the Center's quarterly allocation from the County."
Center board members Carl Crease and Gene Moser happily reported Tuesday, “the County is 100 percent behind us.”
They also noted the city increased its utility abatement last year for the center.
Taxes paid to the county help fund this center and others around Butler County.
The local center at 640 Osage continues to operate many services for the community.
It is a poll site at election time. It’s a Red Cross Good Neighbor Nutrition meal center Monday through Friday. It’s a site for public health immunizations clinics and blood pressure checks.
There’s an exercise class at the facility as well as cards, dominoes, and special interest hobby groups. For more recreation, there; bingo and bunco. Wii bowling, line dancing, and musical jam sessions.  It’s also a drop-off point those in the Prairie Land food program.
Dee Garrett, president of the senior center board of directors, has recruited some sponsors of the many activities  - such as the monthly biscuits & gravy breakfast - to help center finances.
Many companies and businesses in this community have partnered with the center to keep it going
