What's in a name?
With the planned construction, renovation and remodeling of so many school facilities after the passage of a $48 million bond issue, the Augusta School Board decided a policy to control the naming - or renaming - of school structures would be prudent.
The policy was approved Monday night after it was first presented to the board in May.
The policy states that buildings must only be named after former United States Presidents or Kansas Governors. Facilities could be named after local notables but only after that person has retired or died. The local person must be recognized as a supporter of education or youth causes in order to be considered for such an honor.
One building which will never carry a name other than Augusta is the high school or any subsequent high school.
All high schools will carry the name Augusta and may contain directional descriptions in the future.
The general procedure will include forming a committee composed of school officials and members of the general public. That committee will solicit names and narrow the search during a selection process.
After the committee decides, the board must approve any recommendations.
