With the assistance of a KAN-GO Grant via the Kansas Board of Regents, Butler Community College’s Adult Education division is offering an exciting opportunity for students seeking to complete a high school degree while training for a career in welding or acute care nursing.
“I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for students who don’t want to go to school long-term,” said Pam Cannon, Adult Ed instructor. “It’s achievable and students can immediately see results if they need to get out and make more money or get a job to support their families.”
Both programs are available to students this semester and are eligible for financial aid. Additionally, students may apply the earned credits toward a future degree program with Butler.
Along with two students, Cannon surveyed the class last semester to get an idea of what the program would be like for those enrolling.
“The MIG Welding class is very intensive,” Cannon said. “It requires very good reading and comprehension skills. Students learn things quickly and go out into the shop and apply it.”
“It built my confidence up,” said  Will McMillen, who took the welding class last semester. “Jobs are hard to get right now. You don’t have to do this by yourself. People will help you. There’s a certain amount of pride; when you succeed, it just makes you want do more.”
Though the eight-week welding classes are taught in Hillsboro, Butler Adult Ed is offering free transportation “to remove that barrier” for students who might not be able to make the drive on their own. During the drive time, instructors are willing to help students study and work on GED-related material.
