Casey W. Cleary, 19, Wichita, was injured when his All Terrain Vehicle collided with a northbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train round 6 p.m. Friday near Gordon.
Cleary was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment of his injuries. The extent of his injuries were not part of a Kansas Highway Patrol summary. However, it was noted Cleary was not wearing a safety restraint at time of the accident.
KHP troopers who investigated the accident along with sheriff's officers and representatives of BNSF surmised that the ATV 4-wheeler was westbound on a private drive at 16554 SW Hunter Road and failed to yield before striking the oncoming train. The railroad crossing is marked with a stop sign and warning (see accompanying photo).
Engines of the BNSF train were stopped at the town crossing on SW 160th.
Gordon is about six miles south of Augusta and west of US. 77 Highway.
