60 YEARS AGO
1950

The Augusta Merchants basketball team was tied with Boeing for second place in the Naismith League in Wichita.
The local Lions Club held a big Mardi Gras to raise funds for the March of Dimes’ polio fund.
The City Commissioners divided responsibilities into two separate offices. Kenny Barbour was appointed fire chief and Bud Pressnell, assistant chief.  R.O. Jackson was Police Chief.

50 YEARS AGO
1960

The Augusta Orioles came from behind in a blaze of glory at Valley Center to keep their Chisholm Trail League record perfect.  They defeated the Hornets 66-63.
The City Council revoked the cereal malt beverage license of the VFW Club, 505 1/2 State.  The  Council also approved a 10 percent increase for all city employees.
The Augusta State Bank celebrated its first birthday.

40 YEARS AGO
1970

Winners in the Cub Scout Pack 211 Pinewood Derby were Danny Genzler, first and Mark Laubhan, first in Best Design.
Beckye Ann Burden was named Augusta Senior High’s 1970 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow.
Gary and Julie Keely had just opened The Black Angus Cafeteria and Restaurant at 501 State St.

30 YEARS AGO
1980

An organizational meeting was held for “Friends of the Library.”
The City Council candidates were Ed Freeman (incumbent), David Lasiter, Gerald Timmons (incumbent), Brent Coonrod, Bill Price and Bob Griffith.
The Butler County Conservation District marked 34 years of service to Butler County.

20 YEARS AGO
1990

Jim Rawlings, a 40-year veteran of city employment, was honored at a retirement reception.
The top Junior Firefighters of the Year were Jon Nesler and Andy Hall.
John Culver was the new owner of Parks Motor Co.  Parks was one of the oldest continuous businesses in Augusta.  The downtown dealership started in 1945 by the late Dan and Fanny Parks.  It was a Plymouth-DeSota dealership before becoming a Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge dealership.

10 YEARS AGO
2000

A 5-inch snowfall closed area schools and more snow was expected.
The City Council candidates were Larry Chauncey, Brenda Sutton, Gerald Snyder, Bob Bratton, Mike Rawlings and Robert Griffith.
The Augusta Elementary School spelling champs were Chris James, Lincoln; Jordan Stevens, Robinson; Stephen Dubus, St. James; Trent Russell, Garfield; and Layne Bosley, Ewalt.
