The month of May went out in a blaze of heat with temperature readings of 102 degrees on May 31. The month had also been dry with a total rainfall of only 1.84 inches.
The Chat ‘n Chew Drive-In on W. 7th was running a special -- four pieces of fried chicken, a salad, a roll and fries for only $1.
A scheduled City Council meeting did not get under way for more than an hour, due to the lack of a quorum. Instead of cancelling or postponing, an “absent” councilman was tracked down and asked to attend the meeting.

June 1 - 7, 1968
The First Christian Church was moving from State and Main to their new building at 1600 State.
Governor Robert Docking announced that the City of Augusta had been named as a winner in the Kansas Traffic Safety Program for going through an entire year without any traffic deaths inside the city limits.
The Andover City Council agreed to provisions of annexation proposed by residents of 342 acres south of the city, thus killing a new town before it was actually formed. Those residents had threatened to form a new town -- Malcom City.

June 1 - 6, 1978
Representatives from the Kansas Fish and Game Commission and the State Health Department were in Augusta investigating a huge fish kill in the City Lake.
The City Council approved a resolution providing for a not-for-profit organization in connection with construction of a 48-unit apartment complex for the elderly near Kelly and Fairway Drive. The project would be known as Country Club Towers.
Guests as the Clare Patterson home in rural Augusta were Stephen and Viola Armstrong of Wapakoneta, Ohio -- parents of Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the moon.

June 1 -7, 1988
Senator Frank Gaines, D-Augusta, who had served 22 years in the Legislature, filed for re-election.
Augusta placed five players on the Chisholm Trail League All-League baseball team. Jon Emmitt, Chris Williams and Jamie Evans were named to the first team and Brent Leedom and Brian Luinstra made the second team.
Ryan Rogers became the eighth Oriole player selected to play in the annual Kansas Charity All-Star Classic in Wichita.
10 YEARS AGO
June 1 - 7, 1998
Three members of AHS’s baseball team were recognized by the Chisholm Trail All-League selection committee. Pitcher Brett Nachbor and center fielder Dusty Buell were selected to the All-League first team. Landon Riggs received honorable mention as an infielder.
Seven officers with the Augusta Safety Department would be carrying the torch of the Special Olympics through town on the way to Wichita.
