50 YEARS AGO
June 13 - 20, 1958
For the eighth year, the Augusta schools shared in the Federal Assistance provided by the Federal Security Agency for the purpose of assisting schools that were affected by the impact of defense industries.
Augusta Boy Scouts continued to stay very busy doing whatever work assigned to them in the clean up following the El Dorado tornado.  The scouts had been lucky finding many valuable papers and also money. 
Bud Pressnell, Augusta Fire Chief, made a new fire hose nozzle that was going to be featured at the Oklahoma Firemen’s Conference.  It was also used at a fire training school in Lawrence.
40 YEARS AGO
June 12 - 20, 1968
The Costume Committee of the Augusta Centennial Pageant was in charge of 350 costumes for the historical spectacle to be held later in August at Worl Field.
The Kansas State Board of Health approved 40 percent of construction and equipment costs for Augusta’s proposed hospital.
St. James Parish had completed plans for a new Parish Center to be located immediately east of Cliff Dr.
30 YEARS AGO
June 14 - 21, 1978
A new spiral slide was installed at Garvin Park.  The slide had quickly become popular with the local children.
Sandi Simmons, Miss Butler County 1977 was planning to be part of the “People’s Parade” to be held in Garvin Park on July 4th.  A big celebration in the Park was being planned.
A tornado struck the Lakewood Addition in Augusta, ripping off roofs of several houses and damaging vehicles.  Several citizens reported seeing the funnel.
20 YEARS AGO
June 14 - 19, 1988
Mike Shryock claimed first place in the male age 30 - 34 class in the 5K of the Fourth Annual American Red Cross Summer Blood Run.
A local mother and two children reportedly had to be awakened by Augusta Drive-In manager Bob Bisagno after drifting off to sleep during a movie.
Kate Gosch and Ryan Rogers of Augusta were to compete in the Sixth Annual Kansas Charity All-Star Classic in Wichita.  Gosch would play in the basketball game and Rogers in the football game against the top athletes in the Wichita area.
10 YEARS AGO
June 15 - 21, 1998
Ten year-old Harrison Dreiling was featured on the sports page of the Gazette for hitting a grand slam in a victory game in the Pee Wee Division of the Augusta Little League.
Dr. James Clay had made a request to the City Planning Commission for a zoning change at 1000 Lulu for a medical clinic.
The Augusta Theatre was hosting “Summer Movie Camp for Kids.”
