50 YEARS AGO
June 21 - 28, 1959
The Gazette reported that 3,029 young people had graduated from Augusta High School in the 81 years of existence of the institution.  The largest graduation class was in 1958 with 101 students picking up diplomas.
Lake Clymer in the northeast part of Butler County was officially dedicated.  Rolla A. Clymer, editor of the El Dorado Times was instrumental in getting the 120-acre state lake for the county.
The county superintendent decided to annex White Station school district to Haverhill district.  White Station, a one-teacher school five miles northeast of Augusta, had only four pupils the past term.
40 YEARS AGO
June 23- 30, 1969
A house on E. 15th was struck by lightening and the city was pelted with golf ball-size hail.
Police officers, sheriff deputies and state patrolmen frantically dragged the Walnut River southeast of town for a boy and two men from Wichita who were dumped into the river when their canoe capsized in the swift current below the dam.

June 21 - 28, 1979
About $900 had been collected for the annual Augusta Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July fireworks show at the city lake.  AHS drill team members had collected $570 the first day of a two-day fundraising campaign.
Over 70 artists exhibited their works during the fifth annual Arts in the Park Festival at Garvin Park.
Augusta’s Church Softball League continued to provide summer entertainment and boasted 13 teams.
20 YEARS AGO
June 21 -29, 1989
The City Council was looking for input on what to call the park that was under development across Ohio St. from the old drive-in theater.
Casey’s General Store was under construction at the corner of Gregg and Ohio St.
The team of Dave Allison, Steve Shaffer, Bill Richey, and Jake Cauthron won first place in the fifth annual Optimist Club golf tournament.
10 YEARS AGO
June 22 - 30, 1999
After 21 1/2 years, Carol Weirich, vice president and cashier at Prairie State Bank, was retiring.  From the teller’s window to the loan department and all in between, she had been a part of it all.
A special dedication service was held at the First United Methodist Church for the new stained glass in the building’s sanctuary.
Competing in her first state championship meet, Layne Bosley brought home the second place silver medal in the primary girls division with her incredible 14’5.5” shot put throw at the AAU Track and Field State Championships
