50 YEARS AGO
June 11 - 18, 1959
The recent sale of the Rock Hill school building, 4 miles south of El Dorado, had reduced the number of one-teacher schools in Butler County.  The six remaining, one which was not accredited by the State and all of which had enrollments of 20 or less, were: Golden Gate, Indianola, Washington, Lone Star, Tadlock and White Station.
The local post office had expanded their service to include two letter collections each day, except Sunday,  at the 20 mail boxes located on corners around town.
40 YEARS AGO
June 14 - 20, 1969
Leo Korte and his son, Chuck, delivered the first truck load 1969 wheat to the Schneider Bros. Grain & Feed.  The wheat had been harvested a half mile south of Gordon.
Miss Hazel Shamleffer, 84, of Wichita, made a visit to the historic C.N. James Cabin, which was built by her father, Leonard Shamleffer and C.N. James.
A new Chamber of Commerce welcome sign had been installed east of the city.  The sign, located on top of a hill with luminous lettering that stated, “Welcome to Augusta a city of 6,999 friendly faces,” became a familiar site for people entering town from the east.
30 YEARS AGO
June 11 - 18, 1979
Many homeowners and businesses wee still cleaning up from the worst flood since 1965.  Residents in the Meadowview Acres Addition were hardest hit.  Mobil Refinery manager Scott Grieve advised it might take 30 days before the refinery resumed regular production.
Truckers protesting the high cost of diesel fuel, staged a blockade at the entrance to the Getty Refinery in El Dorado.  The truckers ended their blockade a couple of days later after Butler County Sheriff officers asked them to leave.
Citizens were being warned to avoid crossing paths with a badger that had been spotted in the cemetery several times.
20 YEARS AGO
June 14 - 20, 1989
The Augusta Optimist Club’s free fishing derby attracted more than 100 kids to the City Lake.
Matt All, a 1989 AHS graduate and former member of the AHS High-Q quiz team, was part of a Wichita-area team of scholars competing in a national academic quiz program in Orlando, Fla.
Over 21 teams were registered for the fifth annual Optimist golf tournament at the Augusta Country Club.
10 YEARS AGO
June 15 - 21, 1999
Augusta’s Board of Education added girls golf to the high school athletic program.
Local teachers honored for 25 years of service were Dennis Cantu, Tami Ibarra, Barbara McCalla, Kay Ward, Pam Olson, and Sue Sharp.
