Special to the Gazette

The Isabella Weldin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution from Augusta was well represented at the DAR State Conference held in Topeka recently.

Attending from the local chapter were Regent Karen Scheaffer, secretary Annette Scheaffer, Priscilla Templin, Jamie Barton, Arlene McCabe, Lonia Turner and Danielle Powell.  Danielle is a student at Bluestem High School and will be eligible to join DAR when she turns 18.  She will be the fifth generation of her family to join DAR.
During the course of the three day meetings, Annette Scheaffer, Jamie Barton and Danielle Powell served as pages.  They carried flags at processionals, helped the state officers whenever needed, and helped run the Junior Shoppe -- gifts and treats available for the conference goers.

Annette Scheaffer was recognized as Kansas State Outstanding Junior.  She has been a chapter officer and committee chairman for five years.  She also serves as the State Junior vice-chairman of Sales.  She is active in community groups, including the American Legion Auxiliary and the Augusta Historical Society.  She will travel to Washington D.C. to represent Kansas at the National Continental Congress meetings.

Also attending Continental Congress with Annette will be her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Scheaffer, and Jamie Barton, who will be a page at the event.

Jamie Barton was selected to assist at the State Conference memorial service, which recognizes those members of DAR who have passed away during the year.  She placed a flower in memory of her grandmother, Alyce M. Wedding Riggs, who was a member of the Isabella Weldin Chapter.

This was the first State Conference for Jamie, Danielle, Priscilla, and Lonia, who really enjoyed meeting new friends and taking part in all of the festivities.

Chapter awards were given.  Karen Scheaffer was recognized as Outstanding Regent of the Southeast District, and as Outstanding Regent for the State of Kansas.  This year was the first year these awards were presented.
