1950

Douglass residents were raising cash and pledges to complete the fund for the construction of the Copeland Memorial Library south of the post office building.
Augusta was on a water conservation plan with even/odd watering plan for residents.
The weather had cooled.  The high temperature on the third was a cool 74º and on the 4th, 87º.
50 YEARS AGO
1960

The Augusta Board of Education had requested a meeting with the City Council to discuss the possibility of assistance in securing a site for a new high school building. 
Soda pop was flowing in the gutters downtown at 5th and School St. following an accident involving a truck transporting cases of soft drinks.  It had swerved to miss a pedestrian.
Picnics, jaunts to Joyland and the Augusta Drive-in were on the agenda for local teens over the holiday weekend.
40 YEARS AGO
1970

Allan Patterson chalked up another drag racing record at a race track in  Oklahoma City.  He traveled at a speed of 103.68 mph, breaking the previous record of 100.55.
Augusta High School cheerleaders won several top honors at a competition held at Oklahoma University.  Making the trip were Julie Brandt, Cheryl Forrester, Linda Fuller, Peggy Souder, Jeanine Shryock, and Sue Brown.
Lewis Simmons was elected secretary of the Butler County Community College Board of Trustees.
30 YEARS AGO
1980

Acres and acres of Butler County grasslands were burned, flames damaged or destroyed three structures, and nine local firefighters suffered smoke inhalation during an unprecedented rash of weekend fire alarms.  The threat of fires had forced a 2-day postponement of the fireworks display at the City Lake.
Joan Snyder became the first woman president of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce.
20 YEARS AGO
1990

Elementary school teacher Sheryl Erickson became principal at Lincoln Elementary.  She was a 1975 AHS grad and the first woman principal here since the late 1950 s.
10 YEARS AGO
2000

Mid Kansas Engineering consultants told the City Council that no traffic signals were warranted at Ohio St. and Belmont Ave.
Voters gave approval to a $1.5 million bond issued to expand the Augusta Public Library. 
Lt. Butch Haag retired from the Augusta Public Safety Department after 28 years of service.
