Students of Butler County schools were planning a trip via Santa Fe to Oklahoma City. Tickets for the students boarding the train in Augusta were $4.48.
Local clubs and organizations were asked to send a representative to a joint club meeting for the purpose of forming a local disaster and emergency relief organization.
50 YEARS AGO
1960
Frank D. Gaines would be getting his law degree from Washburn University and after admission to the Kansas Bar, he was planning to enter private practice in Augusta.
The Augusta Orioles won the championship trophy in the Derby Invitational Tournament with a 76-66 victory over Anthony. Some fine shooting from Robert Davis gave Augusta the advantage.
School absences were high with local school kids hit hard with colds, flu, measles and chicken pox.
40 YEARS AGO
1970
The local Board of Education announced that the new high school would be completed by June.
Augusta Orioles surprised Wichita South in the semi-final of the El Dorado Bluestem Classic. The next night the Orioles repeated its performance of a year earlier and won the tourney defeating the home team, El Dorado, 57-49.
Oscar Applegate retired after 40 years at Mobil Refinery.
30 YEARS AGO
1980
The Augusta High School debaters were bound for the State tournament: Carey Berger, Jon Nicholas, Melody Richardson, Christa Pierce, Ted Kimble and Roger Riedmiller.
City workers had completed putting a drainage tube under U.S. 54 just east of the dike road. The pipe would drain water from the south side to the north side and dike pumps were installed to pump water outside the city.

1990
Gabe Garcia of Augusta took first in the finals of the Kapaun wrestling tournament.
Leroy Hall was recognized as “Volunteer Fireman of the Year.” Retired police/fire dispatcher Nina Geist received a special award for her years of service to the Safety Department. Retired volunteer firefighter Forest Reavis was honored for his 30 years of service.
Rita Bunck was elected president of the Augusta Arts Council, succeeding Bill Morris.
10 YEARS AGO
2000
Jim Hall was named top volunteer firefighter of 1999. Mark Lewis and Ron Reavis were both recognized for 25 years of service.
Elsie Flaming was elected president of the Augusta Medical Center Auxiliary.
