The Purple Heart 4-H Club held their monthly meeting on Jan. 10, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Andover.  President Courtney Schwartzbeck called the meeting to order.  Paige Smading led the flag salute and Heather Schwartzbeck led the 4-H Pledge.
Fifteen members, seven parents and one guest answered roll call with their favorite sports team.
Katlyn Stahl read the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved.  Gavin Strawn led the club in a song called “The Bear Song.”  Erin Barlett gave the treasurer’s report, Taylor Barlett gave the reporter’s report and Jessica Strawn asked a question for the parliamentarian lesson.  Cari Barlett and Chris Steward gave the leader reports reminding the 4-H’ers of the upcoming 4-H Days.  Emily Logback’s name was drawn for the door prize.  The club signed a thank-you note for a donation to the club.
In new business, the club discussed a community service project to benefit the United Methodist Church and volunteering at the Andover Senior Center.  Katlyn Stahl gave a demonstration on making nachos and Darcey Stahl gave a reading called “Trust in God Always.”
Emily Logback led the club in recreation playing a game of Sparkle.  It was announced that there will be an arts and crafts meeting on Jan. 2, at the church.
The meeting adjourned and refreshments were served by the Schwartzbeck family.

Beta Beta notes

Beta Beta held their January educational and business meeting at the Andover Library.
Diane Stowell and Sue Friedel were co-hostess.
Members brought hats and mittens to the meeting to donate to the children's home.
Plans were made to organize a mathathon for St Judes Kids.  The second grade classes at Praire Creek Elementary are participating in this.
Much discussion was held on the do's and don'ts as we begin our new venture of working the concessions at the Intrust Bank Arena.
“ESA the Sweet Life” is out theme this year.  Lou Hooper gave a class on cake decorating for our educational.  It was very interesting.
A baked potato bar and the game of Farkle was enjoyed by Beta Beta members at their January Social.  Mary Hill was hostess, with Peggy Harrison, Julie Thuillez, Shirley McPhail, and Karen Osborne as co-hostesses.
Mathathon at Prairie Creek Elementary
Beta Beta Philanthropic Organization of Andover is proud to sponser a St. Jude Mathathon at Prairie Creek Elementary School in Andover. Second grade teachers Carey Elsbernd and Tracy Kilpatrick introduced the kids in their classes to a film about cancer kids at St. Jude and how they deal with their illiness. At St. Jude, no child is denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay.
The Mathathon is a free educational program designed to supplement a child's existing math curriculum and is a fund raiser event to help kids of St. Jude.
The program features grade appropriate math problems that are fun. Beside doing the math, and collecting donations for the kids, the Andover kids can also win great prizes through their problem solving and fundraising efforts.
