Julie Brandt, MSN, RN, NE-BC, Associate Director, Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive from the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, originally from Augusta, Kan. was the recipient of the Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs, 2010 Secretary's Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Nursing Programs.
This award is the highest award bestowed upon Nurse Executives within the Department of Veterans Affairs. Each year, this award is given to a Nurse Executive who has been nominated by their colleagues for outstanding service to Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Chosen from individual medical centers throughout the nation, the nominees go through a rigorous review before the final selection is made.
The 2010 Secretary's Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Nursing Programs was presented during an awards ceremony on June 30, 2010 by Eric Shinseki, Secretary, Department of Veterans Affairs and Cathy Rick, Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Veterans Affairs, in Washington D.C.  Ms. Brandt was accompanied to Washington D.C. and the awards ceremony by her mother, Joyce Brandt of Augusta.
For more than 26 years Ms. Brandt has contributed to the VA's mission of providing the highest level of quality care to our nation's Veterans. Her distinguished career with the Department of Veterans Affairs began at the Wichita VA as a staff nurse and Head Nurse. She has also served as Associate Chief Nurse, Associate Chief of Staff for Nursing Service, and Associate Director for Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive at VA's in Denver, Boise, Richmond and Little Rock. Her award speaks volumes about her dedication and leadership on behalf of America's Veterans.
