The 1958 work of Butler County assessors was over and figures showed a gain in population for the county and Augusta. Our community’s population climbed to 6,312.
The Augusta City Council officially took over the complete operation of Santa Fe Lake. The first act of business included setting up a caretaker operation.
All-area and second team all-state fullback from Augusta High School, Mike Bogard signed a letter of intent to enroll at the University of Kansas. He was the son of Mr. & Mrs. G.E. Bogard.
40 YEARS AGO
May 16 - 23, 1968
AHS head basketball coach Dan Justice had accepted a new job at Hutchinson High School. He had been in Augusta for only two years.
AHS principal William Churchman was honored by the high school student body in a special program.
Armand Hillier was hired as head coach at AHS. He was a graduate of Southwestern College and had spend six years coaching basketball at Oxford High School.
Merle Driggs, manager of the Augusta Chamber of Commerce, announced that five Iranian mayors and their interpreter would be in town for a one week visit.

May 16 - 22, 1978
Eileen Dreiling was hired as the girls physical education instructor at AHS.
One Wichita man drowned and another was pulled to safety after a canoe the two were in went over the dam just south of Osage Street on the Walnut River.
AHS junior Troy Nordman established a new AHS record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 10 seconds flat at the 3A Regional Track Meet in El Dorado.

May 17 - 23, 1988
AHS band students Dao Tran and Wayne Hawley received the student voted master musician awards at the annual Bandorama program.
Nina Geist was preparing for retirement after 14 years as a dispatcher with the Augusta Department of Public Safety.
Augusta claimed their third straight trip to the State baseball tournament after defeating Andover 7-3 in the regional championship game.

May 18 - 23, 1998
The Augusta Historical Society hosted their third annual Spring Tea in the historic C.N. James Cabin.
Doralynn Wheatley was retiring after 28 years at Augusta Middle School as coach and physical education teacher.
The AHS Athletes of the Year were Abby Mai and Joey Cantu.
A swift moving storm packed with 60 mph winds lashed Augusta. The storm knocked down trees and left the city streets strewn with debris. No injuries were reported.
