The Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding Center, located at the Murfin Staples, at 143rd St. E. and 13th St. N., just west of Butler County, is improving the bodies, minds and spirits of children and adults with disabilities.
The Center helps improve the quality of life for those with disabilities through equine-assisted therapy. Currently the Center serves 60 clients, many from the Augusta area.
The therapeutic riding program helps improve physical health, relax tight muscles, increase balance, build muscle strength, sharpen hand/eye coordination, improve social skills, and gain a sense of control and self-confidence. Many of the riders experience a freedom never felt before. It offers a haven where riders feel a sense of empowerment.
Amber Hendrix, the Center’s Director of Development, Event Planner and helps with Volunteer Coordination and Programs Assistance, said, “The (riding) therapy adds another element to therapy...some of the clients are frightened at first, but it doesn’t take them long to develop a relationship and trust with their horse.”
Hendrix also advised that they strive to pair up the clients with their favorite horses.
And she explained that the riders are always outfitted with helmets and belts and have four people assisting at all times.
My granddaughter, Katie has benefitted so much from this. It helps with balance, motor skills, and socialization. And this activity is something she can do -- it’s hers alone,” said Bonnie Dakan, as she watched 9 year-old Katie ride during her session.
The Center is a 501 c (3) non-profit organization that depends on donations and gifts.
Hendrix said, “We’re always looking for more volunteers...there is a fall session beginning in September.”
There will be a fundraising Rockin’ Roundup from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The family friendly event will open with clients and their horses in a parade. The will also be demonstrating their riding ability by competing in barrel racing, pole bending and a flag race.
Those attending will enjoy games, raffles, face painting and food. And it is a chance to give some special people a brighter future.
