The Butler County Courthouse elevator will be getting an upgrade.
The county received a $300,000 grant from the National Parks Service. The money will be used to install an elevator at 205 W. Central in El Dorado. The current elevator at the courthouse predates World War II and does not comply with the standards established by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“A new elevator will be the centerpiece of an ongoing courthouse restoration project,” said Will Johnson, Butler County administrator. “The old elevator is temperamental, and some of our citizens are unwilling to use it. It’s also out of compliance with current ADA standards and we need to upgrade to something more user-friendly for our citizens.”
The National Park Service awarded the grant as part of their Save America’s Treasures program. The program funds the restoration and preservation of historic structures and sites.
The Butler County Courthouse was built in 1908. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
