Reminiscing, touring the building, and renewing old friendships are expected to take place east of here Saturday afternoon.
A celebration for Haverhill School and all its attendees, past and present, is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. A short program will be held at 3:30 p.m.
The school is being closed after more than a century of service to the area.
Haverhill Elementary School was founded in the 1870’s and after 135 years of dedication to the community and the youth, its doors are closing. It has become the casualty of declining enrollment in the last few years and the students will be sent to Leon Elementary School a few miles to the east.
Just a few years ago, both elementary schools in Bluestem Unified School District 205 were filled to capacity and growing. Patrons blame the declining enrollment primarily on the cost of land and rising gasoline prices.
Haverhill School is five miles east of Augusta, a half mile north of  Old U.S. 54 Highway.
