The subject of rent de-control for the City of Augusta was aired at a public hearing. A large crowd packed the newly remodeled community hall.
The Augusta Board of Education decided to add two new classrooms to the west side of Garfield School to “take care of the large crop of war babies.”

1960
The Augusta Orioles rolled to a 90-76 victory over Wichita West to take third place in the Class AA regional tourney.
Several cases of tularemia (rabbit fever) had been treated by local doctors.
High school students receiving 1 ratings in the league speech festival were Lonnie Kay Perkins, Susan Allison, Susan Falconer, Nancy Wheeler and Sarah Ann Bryant.
40 YEARS AGO
1970
Augusta was at a standstill after receiving 14 inches of snow. Schools and businesses were closed.
The men elected to be directors of a proposed Augusta community hospital were Paul Mann, Lee Hoopes, O.R. Fowler, Lee Dennett, L.E.Hundemer, Fred Spencer, Ray Howard, Dr. Rex Lee, and Frank Gaines.
In a city league basketball game, Steve Shryock, playing for Safeway, chalked up a total of 73 points to set a season record.

1980
Vesta Wicke was named 1980 Woman of the Year for the Augusta Business & Professional Women’s (BPW) Club.
Oscar winning actor Ben Johnson was in town helping with a promotion at Hatfield Chevrolet.
The strike at Mobil was in its second week and prospects for an early settlement were slim.
20 YEARS AGO
1990
Irma Kidd was selected as the Woman of the Year by the BPW Club.
Mike Browning was named the Player of the Year in the CTL’s Division 1. Besides Browning, seniors Chad Wesbrooks and Brent Leedom were picked for the all-league team.
A group of Robinson School mothers had organized a school safety patrol to slow and stop vehicles passing through intersections near the school.
10 YEARS AGO
2000
Oriole seniors Karen Arnold and Lauren Alley had both signed to play softball at Fort Scott Community College.
Nancy Turnage was the new secretary to City Manager Bill Keefer. She succeeded Raedine Crandall.
The TAS Dance Ensemble from Augusta was in San Diego for the 2000 NCA Danz National Championship. The local squad was Laura Randall, Meaghan Malone, Chelsea Phillips, Ashley Paschal, Jamie Pickert, Lyndsay Chance, and Adriane Caggiano.
