Robinson Elementary Principal Greg Taylor hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon and kicked off the construction work which began today at the district’s only elementary building not being replaced.
The passage of the $48 million bond issue in 2008 is making possible the addition of a gym, music room, stage, a FEMA shelter (housing two kindergarten classrooms and the four-year olds), and a new parking lot on the north side of the current Robinson school building.
“It’s a new beginning. This is going to help educate the kids even better than we’re already doing. We’re proud of being a Blue Ribbon School and now we’ll have a new area to work in,” Taylor said.
Principal Taylor also pointed out that the old portable classrooms had been there since the 1960’s, “They are an example of what has been needed. We appreciate the Board of Education, the administration and the community for passing the bond issue.”
District Superintendent Jim Lentz encouraged the students to be patient during the construction period and asked them to do their best in continuing to learn through the process.
BOE President Bill Rinkenbaugh was happy to share the celebration with the students and explained that previous groundbreakings at Ewalt and Lincoln were happy occasions, as well. Rinkenbaugh currently has a son and a granddaughter attending Robinson Elementary and reported his enjoyment in watching their growth and academic successes at the local school.
Robinson alumni attending the ceremony included Augusta Mayor Kristey Williams, BOE member Larry Winter and BOE clerk Connie Hummel.
- The construction project, including the new wing and remodeling, is expected to be completed by June, 2011.
