Collegiate's boys basketball team was able to push past Augusta 53-44 to win the opener of the Mulvane sub-state tournament Tuesday night.
The Orioles had a 31-24 midway through the third quarter after Tristan Finch grabbed a rebound and went coast to coast for a layup. A 3-pointer by Chase Winter gave Augusta a 36-34 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Spartans slowly took over in the fourth quarter. Connor Hurst hit a pullup jumper to pull Augusta within one at 43-42, but the Spartans' defense stiffened, not allowing Augusta another basket for nearly 4 minutes.
Collegiate standout Riley Kemmer, who only scored three points in the first half, finished with 14, which included a crucial 3-pointer that was well defended to put Collegiate up 46-42.
The Orioles had several chances to cut into the lead, but they weren't able to hit shots down the stretch.
With the loss, Augusta finishes its season with an 8-12 record.
