Katy Nordman took her intensity level up a notch in the Orioles' second match Tuesday night against Collegiate.
Nordman and Augusta's volleyball team lost to Andale for the third time this season in the opener of the Orioles' home triangular. So Nordman made sure the Orioles brought their best game to close the night.
After splitting the first two sets with the Spartans, Nordman had a pair of emphatic blocks and added an ace and a tap kill in the final game to help lead the Orioles to a 25-16, 23-25, 25-19 victory.
She made several plays throughout the match and pumped up her teammates after each one. Nordman finished with four kills, two blocks and two aces in the match.
In Game 1 against Collegiate, Kalie Robinson had back-to-back service aces to open up an early Oriole lead. But Augusta let Collegiate back in the match with service and return errors, something the team uncharacteristically struggled with all night.
After Collegiate got a block to the opener 10-10, Courtney Phillips got a kill during a quick 5-0 spurt. Phillips, Casady Marlnee and Mariah Zerr added kills down the stretch as Augusta took the first set.
The Orioles were in control of Set 2. Taylore Emond and Marlnee had early kills, Destiny Williams later added a tap kill and Collegiate made some errors as Augusta led 18-11. But the Spartans picked up their play on defense and got three block kills to spark a 7-1 run. After an Orioles' defensive error tied the game at 22-22, Collegiate won three of the next four points to take Set 2.
The Orioles put together an impressive offensive performance in the final set to clinch the win. Nordman and Phillips combined for six kills in the set. Nordman had a block and a tap kill as Augusta broke a 12-12 tie with a 7-1 run. Augusta won the final four points for the win.
In the opening match, Andale's defense was too good for Augusta. The Indians got some blocks in Set 1 and didn't make a whole lot of errors, making it difficult for the Orioles to find points. Andale easily won 25-14, 25-14. The Indians also beat Collegiate in two sets.
Augusta will compete at the Clearwater Triangular Tuesday, Oct. 2 for a pair of league tilts. Circle also will compete.
