The Andover Trojans scored in every inning but one to claim a 23-5 win

over Butler County rival Augusta Orioles Wednesday in the opening game

of the Kansas American Legion Class AAA, Zone 5 Tournament at

    Klein-Scott Field.

The game was called after seven innings on the 10-run rule.

“Colton Patterson really settled down after the first inning,” Andover

manager Chris Weidert said. “He started to find the zone. It was a

pretty tight zone. It was big for us (to turn double plays) and not

make any errors. That shortened innings.”

“Our pitching wasn’t there tonight, plain and simple,” Augusta manager

Jay Ingalls said. “After that, it was an average game. We never gave

    up.”

Andover will face the host Newton Senior Knights at 5 p.m. today in

the championship semifinals. The Newton-Andover loser meets Augusta in

the consolation semifinals at approximately 8 p.m.

“We owe Newton,” Weidert said. “They beat us four times this year.

It’s going to be a battle. A couple of those games were close.”

“It’s double-elimination, so you never know,” Ingalls said. “We’ve

    come back in tournaments before.”

Each team scored three runs on four hits in the first inning. Andover

then posted six runs in the second inning, seven in the third and

three in the fourth, putting the game out of reach.

Andover starter Patterson went five innings for the win, striking out

five. J.J. Poulus finished the game, allowing a run with four walks.

Patterson went two for four hitting for Andover with four RBIs. Kyle

Vogt went four for six with three RBIs. Cooper Nichols went three for

six with three RBIs. Andover had 11 players with at least one hit and

11 players with at least one RBI.

Chad Izzo went two for three hitting for Augusta. Starting pitcher

Blake Wallace took the loss. Augusta used five pitchers to try and

    control the damage.
